Gmail (IMAP)
This guide explains how to connect a personal Gmail account to MyEmailVault using IMAP with an App Password.
Prerequisites
- A Google account with 2-Step Verification enabled (required to generate App Passwords).
Setup Steps
1. Create an Ingestion Source
In MyEmailVault, navigate to Ingestions and click Create New. Select Gmail (IMAP) as the provider.
2. Enter Your Gmail Address
In the Username field, enter your full Gmail address (e.g., yourname@gmail.com).
3. Generate an App Password
Google does not allow third-party applications to authenticate with your regular account password. You must generate a 16-character App Password.
- Go to Google App Passwords.
- Sign in if prompted.
- Enter a descriptive name for the app (e.g., "MyEmailVault") and click Create.
- Google will display a 16-character password. Copy it immediately -- it will not be shown again.
4. Enter the App Password
Paste the 16-character App Password into the Password field in MyEmailVault.
5. Save
Click Save to create the ingestion source. MyEmailVault will connect to Gmail's IMAP server and begin importing your emails.
What Happens Next
After saving, the source status will transition through the following states:
- Importing -- The initial bulk import is in progress.
- Active -- Import is complete and continuous sync is running.
- Error -- Something went wrong. Check the source details for the error message.
MyEmailVault will continue to sync new emails automatically while the source remains active.
Troubleshooting
- "App Passwords" option is not available: Ensure that 2-Step Verification is enabled on your Google account. App Passwords are only available when 2-Step Verification is active.
- Authentication failed: Verify that you copied the full 16-character App Password without spaces and that your Gmail address is correct.
